Imperial’s Schools STEM-a-thon, India

Imperial College London is proud to host its first-ever schools STEM-a-thon Competition in India. STEM-a-thon by Imperial College London is a event where participants will be coming together to create innovative scientific solutions aimed at achieving one of the United Nation’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development. To enter the competition, each team must create a 5-minute film. We aim to push the boundaries of technology and innovation through this STEM-a-thon, making it an exciting and enriching experience for all involved.

This prestigious competition provides a unique platform for high school students in India to showcase their problem-solving skills to the expert faculty of Imperial College London. This competition is designed to inspire and empower young innovators, fostering global talent and innovation. We are thrilled to bring this opportunity to students across India, offering them the chance to work collaboratively on challenging problems and gain invaluable insights from world-renowned experts.

DATES

  • August 16, 2024, to September 28, 2024 (Online) – Round 1 Registrations
  • 28th September, 2024- Last date to make the payment to register
  • 11th October, 2024- Last date for Round 1 Project Submission
  • 11th November, 2024- Round 1 Results
  • 7th and 8th, December 2024 – The final round to take place at a venue in Delhi for selected teams

  • Round 1: Online
  • Round 2: New Delhi, India (only for shortlisted teams)

REGISTRATION FEE

  • 150 GBP per school team of 3 students (50 GBP per student)

Please note that the fee ONLY covers participation costs for both rounds. Travel and accommodation arrangements to Delhi for the final round must be borne by the students themselves, and by the school for accompanying teachers, in case they are shortlisted.

TEAM ELIGIBILITY

  • All team members must be studying at the same school and branch.
  • State board-affiliated schools are not permitted. Any requests from state board-affiliated schools will be rejected.
  • This is a team event, where each team will consist of three eligible students and one teacher to safeguard the team.  All four persons must come from the same school and branch.  
  • Teams will be the responsibility of the school throughout the competition including chaperoning students to and during the final round of the competition, if selected. 
  • All team members must be in Grades 10 to 12. A mix of grades per team is permitted.
  • Schools should aim to send one team per school but if further teams are supported by the school, please contact the STEM-a-thon team before applying.

How To Enter The Competition

Teams will be tasked with developing a new and innovative scientific solution aimed at achieving one of the United Nation’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development. . To enter the competition, each team must create a 5-minute film that:

  • Briefly outlines the goal you have chosen.
  • Describes your innovative solution.
  • Explains the science behind your idea.
  • Illustrates how your idea addresses the selected goal.

Round 1 registered entries will be judged by the team at Imperial College London.

Finalists will be selected and invited to participate in the final round in New Delhi.

Registration terms

Eligibility Criteria

All students must be 15 – 17 years of age from the date applications close and must not turn 18 years old until after 9 December 2024.

All students applying must be in either Grade 10, 11, or 12.

Students will be required to show proof of address, age, school branch, school year and school approval.

All school teams must be from one of the four Boards mentioned below:

  • Council for Indian School Certificate Examination – Indian School Certificate (CISCE – ISC).
  • Central Board of Secondary Education – All India Senior School Examination (CBSE – AISSE) .
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP).
  • Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE).
  •  

COMPETITION FORMAT

Round 1: Online

Participants will submit their project proposals and solutions online after receiving acknowledgement and instructions. A panel of judges, consisting of faculty members from Imperial College London, will review the submissions and select the top 15 teams to advance to the next in-person round.

Round 2: In-Person in Delhi, India

Selected teams will participate in an exciting two-day event in New Delhi, where they will further develop on their projects, present their solutions, all in the presence of Imperial's expert faculty and compete for exciting prizes.
